Martha Ann Sisson participated in Bisnow’s April roundtable along with managing partners from several national law firms. Topics included on-going changes in the practice of law and in the management of lawyers. Also discussed was increased competition for the same clients and matters between boutiques and full-service firms.

G&S Recruiters attend NALP Conference in Seattle, Washington
Justine Donahue, Sadie Madole, Matt Schwartz and Barbara Steele attended the annual NALP Conference in Seattle, Washington in early April. Our recruiters had a wonderful time networking with their law firm recruiting coordinator clients and attending informative sessions covering topics including: recruiting for niche practice areas (such as tax, patent, healthcare and FDA, etc.); building strategic alliances among search firms, recruiting coordinators and hiring partners; and lateral partner due diligence and best practices. Garrison & Sisson held three Tory Burch handbag giveaways that drew tremendous crowds.

“Cracking the DC Legal Market” — Matt Schwartz and Sadie Madole advised University of Pennsylvania Law School students about the DC legal market, discussing which practice areas are currently in demand, and how to approach on-campus interviews (OCI) for those students who wish to work in Washington, DC. Their presentation also discussed strategies for researching law firms for OCI, descriptions of various practice areas, and credentials and competitiveness in the DC legal market. This year Matt and Sadie were pleased to have two law students join them on the panel. These students attended G&S’ presentation in 2013 and shared their success stories on pursuing summer associate positions in DC for the summer of 2014 with their peers.

Dan Binstock and Matt Schwartz presented at Georgetown University Law Center this past March before approximately 75 first year law students. The talk was a general overview of the Washington, DC law firm market and covered practice areas, current trends, and job search strategies for law students.

At the offices of Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C., the Washington Metro Area Corporate Counsel Association (“WMACCA”) held a Career Development Forum: Job Search 360 for its members. Martha Ann Sisson, Nancy Palermo, Sadie Madole and Barbara Steele counseled in-house lawyers on topics including updating your resume, interviewing skills, networking strategies, on-line employment applications, and making sure LinkedIn and other social media profiles are updated and effectively presented for job searches. Martha Ann, Nancy, Sadie and Barb met with lawyers in 15-minute-one-on-one sessions to provide individualized advice to in-house counsel who are thinking about or currently pursuing new opportunities. Nancy Palermo featured moderator for In-House Counsel Career Panel Presentation at Catholic University, Columbus School of Law
Nancy Palermo moderated Catholic University’s In-House Counsel Career Panel Presentation for students. The three panelists were other Catholic Law alumni: Karen Grubber (Vice President & Assistant General Counsel at Host Hotels & Resorts), Ben Roca (General Counsel at the National Electronics Museum, a non-profit subsidiary of Northrop Grumman’s Electronics System Sector), and Scott Stiefel (General Counsel at DrFirst). The panelists provided an overview of their career track beginning with how they obtained their first in-house position, discussed briefly their area(s) of expertise, and walked students through a typical day as an in-house lawyer. It was a lively panel discussion with lots of questions from students interested in practicing with a corporate legal department.
